Alabama – BCS Contendor

Alabama – BCS Contendor

Alabama will be looking to ride its devastating defense all the way to New Orleans as the Crimson Tide tries to fight its way into the All state BCS National Championship Game on January 9, 2012. Coach Nick Saban’s squad needs some help, but is hoping to earn the right to avenge its only loss of the season by facing off with Louisiana State for the championship. With two regular season games left, only the Cowboys of Oklahoma State stand in the way of what many experts believe would be a truly classic showdown between the Tide and the Tigers of LSU.

While Saban’s offense piles up the yards (nearly 450 yards per game) and the points (24th in the nation at 34.5 points per game), they do their damage with a devastating defense. Ranked first nationally at a measly 7.1 points per game, the team has only given up more than 10 points three times, with even #1 ranked Louisiana State University only able to muster 9 points in a 9-6 overtime win against the Crimson Tide. Prior to the LSU game, Alabama beat three ranked teams (#23 Penn State, #14 Arkansas and #12 Florida) by a total of 103-35.

While LSU and Oklahoma State would provide a spectacular offense versus defense show, many are hoping for the type of rivalry game that LSU and Alabama could provide. While Alabama needs some help in order to force its way into the championship game, BCS tickets would likely be purchased at a record rate for the chance to see these two rivals face off. An all-SEC title game showdown could be the type of game that produces a record number of spectators for the national championship; if that games comes down between Alabama and Louisiana State, fans are likely to be treated to one of the best defensive battles the title tilt has ever seen.

Arkansas – BCS Contendor

Arkansas – BCS Contendor

While not every team at the top of the BCS standings can be considered a prospect for the title game, teams like Arkansas are certain to strong draws, selling BCS tickets no matter which bowl invites them. The Razorbacks are a powerful team and head coach Bobby Petrino has them playing great football as the season draws to a close. A prolific offensive squad, the team has also played great defense while navigating a difficult SEC schedule that features games against five top-15 teams. After a loss to #3 Alabama in the fourth game of the season, the Razorbacks have run off six straight wins as they seek to gain momentum ahead of a November 25th showdown with #1 Louisiana State.

While Arkansas’ defense has been solid, (ranking 29th in the country in points allowed per game) the offense has been the driving force of this squad. Ranked 11th nationally with over 310 yards per game in the air, the team is 13th in the country while averaging less than 39 point per contest. With nearly 150 yards of rushing each outing, the Razorbacks produce a devastating 460 yards of total offense each game, allowing them to knock of such powerhouses as #14 Texas A&M, #15 Auburn and most recently, #9 South Carolina.

Without an amazing sequence of events, Arkansas will not be playing in the All state BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans, but the team will likely be playing in a major bowl nonetheless. Many experts have them slated for the Capital One Bowl as a potential opponent for Big 10 powerhouses Wisconsin or Michigan. Either opponent would be an enticing matchup for the Razorbacks in a game that would almost certainly turn into a battle, but a date with the Badgers of Wisconsin would be especially exciting as two perennial powerhouses went toe-to-toe.

Boise State – BCS Contendor

Boise State – BCS Contendor

Much like last year, Boise State is the Cinderella team that seemed poised to go to the big dance, yet its BCS ticket was once again lost as the result of a field goal. This year, a missed attempt by the Broncos sealed its fate against Texas Christian University, handing head coach Chris Petersen’s squad the only loss of its season and knocking the team out of contention for a BCS bowl game. While a crushing disappointment for this talented squad, the Broncos are still a lock to display their exciting brand of mid-major football in one of the holiday bowls.

To describe Boise State as an offensive powerhouse would be accurate, but it would also overlook the fact that the team has a solid defensive unit which has contributed to the Broncos’ 8-1 record. Racking up 475 yards per game, the offense is ranked 14th nationally in passing and 43rd in rushing with a healthy 177 yards during each outing. As prolific as the 7th ranked scoring unit has been, the defense has been bruising, allowing only 18.9 point each contest for 15th place in the national ranking. The defense has allowed opponents to score over 21 only once, while the offense has put up at least 30 points in every game.

As time expired and a potential game-winning field goal by Boise State sailed wide in the TCU game, the Broncos chances at a BCS game went with it. That said, this talented team will be playing over the holidays, with its most likely destination being San Diego, California for December 21st showdown against Louisiana Tech in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. Although Cinderella won’t be invited to the big dance, this talented team from Idaho will still have the opportunity to thrill the crowd at one of this year’s college bowl games.

Clemson – BCS Contendor

Clemson – BCS Contendor

While a late season loss at Georgia Tech ruined any title hopes, 7th ranked Clemson is still in position to grab one of the coveted postseason games where BCS tickets are sold. Fourth-year head coach Dabo Swinney has the Tigers offense humming and the Tigers defense is effective enough to help the team post a 9-1 record to date as they head into the final two weeks of the season. Tucked in between Arkansas and ACC rival Virginia Tech in the rankings, Clemson is looking to claim its 14th conference championship before muscling its way into one of the top postseason bowls.

The Tigers have used a devastating air attack and effective ground game to create one of the more prolific scoring squads in 2011. The 12th rated passing game has been a big part of the team pounding out 480 yards per game, while coming in at 14th in scoring with 37.3 points each game. Clemson has needed those big numbers from its offense since the defense is giving up almost 26 points each contest; nevertheless, the combination has been effective, with the team winning all of its games at Memorial Stadium and suffering its only loss on the road to the Yellow Jackets.

Clemson ends the season on the road, traveling to Raleigh to face North Carolina State before its final-game showdown with its rival, #12 South Carolina. Needing two wins to hold its position in the BCS rankings, the Tigers will have to shore up a defensive unit that has surrendered 128 points in the past four games. Experts are looking at a probable Discover Orange Bowl matchup with Cincinnati; given the Tigers’ big play potential, this could be an excellent chance to win, as the Bearcats have tumbled out of the top 25. Look for the Tigers to play strong through the end of the season and roar into January with a win.

Louisiana State – BCS Contendor

Louisiana State – BCS Contendor

The race for the college football championship is on, and 10 games into the season, the Louisiana State University Tigers are leading the pack as the teams eye a potential showdown for the January 9, 2012 title at the All state BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans, Louisiana. Currently sporting a 10-0 record, coach Les Miles’ Tigers are powering their way through the schedule with an efficient offense and a punishing defense, hoping to stamp their BCS ticket to college football’s biggest game.

Although not a highly-ranked offensive unit, the Tigers are still rated 99th in passing yards and 30th in rushing yards as they have piled up at least 35 points in 8 of their 10 games. The defense, on the other hand, has been dominant, allowing a stingy 10 points per game, helping to lead the way to wins over 6 ranked opponents. Their signature win for the season came on November 5th when they upended then-second ranked Alabama 9-6 in overtime, creating the one game that separates the two SEC foes in the standings. The three point victory at Alabama was also the only game this year that an opponent has been within 10 points of topping LSU.

Should LSU run the table, its likely opponent would be Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are second in the BCS rankings while leading the pack in the Big 12 conference. With LSU’s balanced offensive attack and smothering defense, the Tigers have been the season-long favorites to turn a virtual home game at the BCS championship into their coronation as the 2012 champs of college football. The team has a proven coach and experienced leadership on the field, making it the favorite to take the title. BCS tickets are generally difficult to get, but they could be especially tough to find this year as the #1 Tigers look to finish a perfect season with a national title in their home state.

Oklahoma State – BCS Contendor

Oklahoma State – BCS Contendor

An unstoppable force and an immovable object could collide on January 9, 2012 with Louisiana State and Oklahoma State on pace to meet at the All state BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans, Louisiana. Led by an explosive offense, Coach Mike Gundy’s Cowboys will look to punch their BCS ticket en route to their first national championship. LSU’s stingy defense will be put to the test if they face the Cowboys, a high scoring team with one of the best aerial assaults in the game today.

Blasting its way through the Big 12, Oklahoma State is an offensive juggernaut, racking up amazing totals for yards and points per game. Through mid-November, the Cowboys are 10-0, winning by a margin of over 25 points per game and sporting signature wins over three ranked teams, including then #8 Texas A&M, #22 Texas and #14 Kansas State. The Cowboys offense will surely test the any championship opponent as it averages nearly 600 yards per game in total offense and 51 point per game. Although it is known for the gaudy offensive numbers, the defense holds its own as well, ranking #62 in the country for points against.

Just as LSU has been steamrolling its opponents, Oklahoma State has been equally impressive, racking up six games with 50 or more points. The Cowboys have an easier road to the championship than the Tigers, with only #5 Oklahoma posing a serious threat to OSU’s title hopes. Should LSU and Oklahoma State meet in Louisiana on January 9th, BCS tickets will be hard to come by as fans flock to the Louisiana Superdome to see two of college football’s superpowers square off. The question that will likely be answered on that day is whether the unstoppable force of OSU’s offense can overcome the immovable object that is LSU’s defense.

Oregon – BCS Contendor

Oregon – BCS Contendor

Lost in all the talk of a college football title game featuring Louisiana State, Oklahoma State or Alabama is the impressive season unfolding at Oregon. Head coach Chip Kelly’s Ducks are currently dominating the Pac-12 conference and sitting in 4th among BCS teams. With a bruising offense and a strong defense, the Ducks are staying in the conversation for the title game as the season unfolds. Since their season-opening loss to then-#4 LSU, Oregon has run off nine wins, with their most recent victory being a strong win over #4 Stanford and its Heisman trophy candidate, Andrew Luck.

A fast, powerful team, the Ducks grind out an amazing 500 yards per game on offense, piling up nearly 47 points per game while only giving up 21.7. The team is ranked 5th in the country with nearly 300 yards per game on the ground, and its points per game total stands in 3rd place nationally. With a win margin of 25 points per game, the team has taken down #18 Arizona State and Stanford for its signature wins in 2011. The 69 points the Ducks scored on September 10th rank as one of the highest scoring games in Division I this year.

Although the idea of Oregon in the title game is not far-fetched, the Ducks are more likely to be the Pac-12 representatives in the Rose Bowl; the team only has home games against unrated USC and Oregon State remaining. With both Michigan State and Wisconsin as potential opponents, Oregon will likely enter the game as the favorite, thanks in large part to one of the dominant offenses in the game today. Regardless of whether they play in New Orleans or Pasadena, the Ducks have impressed many college football experts, and are likely to sell a large number of BCS tickets with their hard-nosed style of play.

Stanford – BCS Contendor

Stanford – BCS Contendor

One of the biggest on-going stories in the 2011 college football season has been the exploits of Heisman trophy candidate Andrew Luck as the Stanford Cardinals make a push for the national championship. Although a 53-30 loss to Oregon has derailed the Cardinals’ hopes to win the national title, Luck has continued to be a hot topic as the 9-1 Stanford squad attempts to punch their BCS ticket to one of college football’s elite holiday bowls. With expected season-ending wins against Cal and Notre Dame, first-year coach David Shaw has his team poised to step into one of the premier games as Luck finishes his illustrious career.

While Stanford has been noted for a powerful offense spearheaded by Luck, the Cardinals have also enjoyed a bruising defense that has helped the team achieve a +26 point per game differential in spite of its 23-point loss to Oregon. A surprisingly balanced offense, the Cardinals average 279 yards of passing and 215 rushing yards, good enough for national standings of 22nd and 19th respectively. Ranked 5th in points per game, the team balances its effort with a 25th ranked defense at 20.2 points per game. The points-against number would be even lower if not for the 53 scored by Oregon and 48 points that USC put up in a triple overtime thriller on October 29th.

Stanford will most likely be lining up against a BCS contender in one of the prime post-New Years Day bouts. The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl is the probable destination, with a matchup against either Oklahoma City or Oklahoma possible; a tantalizing game can be expected against either foe. Regardless of who the Stanford Cardinals play in the holiday bowls, it is certain that the likely Pac-12 champs will bring their balanced attack and expect to win, since they do have Luck on their side.
